I have a deep appreciation for poetry, particularly the interplay between music and text. There is a unique power that arises from the sensual depth achieved when these two art forms work in tandem. Upon discovering this poem by Sylvia Plath, which so vividly captures a wide range of emotions, I was inspired to create music that both comments on and responds to the text. This work serves as an exploration of that dynamic relationship.

Laissez Faire, meaning “Let Do” or “Let It Be,” embodies a philosophy of non-intervention and permissiveness, allowing events to unfold without interference. This concept captures a cultural ambivalence toward progress—embracing ambition and careerism while simultaneously revealing a cynical detachment from the cost of such pursuits.

In this piece, the music reflects that tension by oscillating between suavity and derision, with a persistent central motive symbolizing the relentless drive for success and perfection. Through its shifting moods, the work explores the uneasy balance between outward ambition and inner disillusionment, embodying the complex, often contradictory spirit of modern Western life under the ethos of “Laissez Faire.”
